      FAQ
      Who can attend?
We’re looking for the best of the best to compete for the UK. This includes seasoned studio staff, experienced developers, talented students and passionate XR creatives.
Ideally you are a Developer or a creative and have had some interest or experience with XR projects before and in order to be considered for top prizes from Meta, a interest in learning or experience with the Meta Mixed Reality Presence Portal for Meta Quest 3.

How much does XR Hack cost?
It's free! We just need you to cover your travel and accommodation. If you need support on finding accommodation, feel free to reach out in the dedicated discord server.
      What should I bring?
Your XR working equipment and laptop  but Meta Quest 3 is the ideal headset for developing winning ideas. We will be providing some equipment for teams to use on the days on a first come, first serve basis.
What is the code of conduct?
XR Hack values the importance of a safe and all-inclusive space. Anyone attending must adhere to our code of conduct.
      When do applications close?
Applications close 7 days before the hackathon starts. However, please be aware that we accept applications on a rolling basis, and we do have limited hacker spots per event. That means, apply as soon as possible to reserve your seat!
Can I apply with a team?
That's up to you! Feel free to apply together with your team, or alone. If you are joining on your own, you will have the chance to meet great new team members on site at the hack or perform teams on our discord.
How big are the teams allowed to be?
Teams should not be larger than 5 members.
Are we allowed to build on past projects?
No, you are not allowed to start developing/coding/wireframing your project (so you cannot bring any repo or code snippet that has been developed for your specific hack project before the hackathon)
However, you can brainstorm and think of different ideas with your team beforehand.
*How does the 100k funding work?
Meta encourages you to turn your prototypes into real games and apps! To support this, $100,000 has been allocated for the winners of the hackathon to help you continue developing and launching you projects to the market. A minimum of $50,000 will be distributed through a process entirely managed by Meta. More info on our Terms & Conditions.
Will you have hardware equipment to use?
We will provide a number of Meta Quest 3 headsets to work with, however to make sure we have enough headsets on site, it would be great if you could bring your own.
      What does Mixed Reality mean?
For the purpose of the hackathon Mixed Reality refers to the blending of physical and virtual worlds via a XR headset. This is commonly used with a feature called ‘Passthrough’ and with the Meta Quest 3 headset uses cameras and sensors to map the real space around you, objects in your space, your hands and much more to create realistic and natural experiences - creating the illusion of seamless blended realities.
Will you be accepting non developers?
Yes we will be embedding creatives, 3D artists and UX Designers into each team as a requirement. If you are experienced with XR and keen to hack please apply
Can I develop experiences for non XR applications or with alternative  peripherals ie Arduino?
We are only encouraging XR experiences to be made at the hack and mixed reality prototypes using the meta presence platform will have the greatest chance of winning. If peripherals are used that fit within this framework this is acceptable.
Can I use any game engine to develop?
You are welcome to use any platform or language compatible with the Quest 3 and Meta presence platform. Typical tools we encourage you to use to create your experience you are Unreal Engine and Unity.
I have received an email saying I am ‘Conditionally approved', does this mean I can attend?
Yes this just means we’d love to have you at the hack but we want to encourage you to read up on the Meta Presence Platform via our free training material so you can get the best out of the event and have the best chance of success.
Simply mark your acceptance via the link in the email and we will know to expect you on the day.
Do I have to attend all three days and/or  can I come to simply observe?
We are only accepting hackers who can attend all three days. This means your teammates have the best chances in the competition.
The event is not open to the general public but if you'd like to volunteer please make contact here [email protected]
